The COVID-19 pandemic is stressful for everyone. It is important to remember to maintain some peace and balance in your life over the next few weeks while living in quarantine.
Get dressed
Trying to maintain some aspects of your normal daily routine is very important when working from home or looking for a new job due to layoffs. Lounging around in pajamas all day may sound really good in theory, but can wreak havoc on your mental health after a few days. In order to prevent burnout:
• Get up early.
• Brush your teeth.
• Take a shower.
• Get dressed.
• Eat breakfast.
• Work from somewhere other than your bed.
Get outside
Staying in your house all-day every day is terrible for your mental health. To keep from going stir crazy it is necessary to get out every once and a while, and there are many proven health benefits associated with spending at least an hour outside every day. If you can: • Go on a walk around the neighborhood. • Sit outside on your front steps to eat lunch. • Work from a table in your back yard.
• Take a conference call from your balcony. • Get in the car, roll down the windows, and just go for a drive
(if you are living in an area with strict quarantine guidelines, going for a drive may
not be legal right now. Please do not break any laws!).
Talk to your loved ones
It is important to stay connected to the people you care about, they are your best support system, and you are theirs. Now is a good time to find new methods of connection that do not include sitting down over food to catch up.
Utilize video calls so that you can see each others faces, and you both have an added reason to get dressed. You can even group call so that you can see multiple friends at the same time.
Try using services like: Skype, Zoom, Facetime, or Facebook Messenger Video. Other methods you can try include:
• Make phone calls to check in or just chat about your day.
• Get online and play a video-game together.
• Watch a show together using Netflix Party feature
Get active
Being quarantined should not be an excuse for not doing anything. Having regular physical activity is vital to good mental and physical health. There are plenty of things you can do without a gym to maintain a healthy active lifestyle:
• Go for a run around your neighborhood.
• Practice meditation.
• Do body weight exercises in your home.
• Use what you can find around your house to substitute as free-weights. (for
instance, a gallon of water weighs about 8lbs).
• Look to the internet for other home exercise inspiration.
