Is a master's degree in teaching right for you?

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

It depends. You certainly do not need a master's degree in order to teach. A bachelor's degree is all anyone needs for most teaching positions, so why would anyone consider getting a master's?

If you want to teach in a college or teach college credit courses for high school students; you need a higher education degree. Teachers looking to teach higher level courses must have higher level degrees.

Just like standard high school classes are not taught by someone with only a high school level education, college classes are not taught by someone with only a basic college education. The higher the educational level., the higher the degree is needed.

But what if you want to teach in an elementary school, is there any benefit to getting a master's? Yes. As a general rule, the higher your education level, the higher your base pay will be, and the more sought after you will be.

To create a well -educated society, you need well -educated people teaching. So, most school systems will pay a good bit more for a teacher with a higher -level degree. What about the costs of getting the degree?

Will the difference in pay outweigh the cost of the degree itself? Probably not right away. So, if you are only planning on being in education for a year or two, a master's degree might not be worth it for you.

But, since many school systems value higher -educated teachers, most schools will be willing to subsidize a lot of your educational costs while you are working in the school. And, many universities have special programs for teachers who would like to continue their education.

Such programs can include specialized curriculums, easier and more straightforward application processes, and sometimes reduced costs. For someone who is willing to take a little extra time on their degree and work while they are earning it, programs like this can be an amazing way to get a higher education with minimal additional costs and a big bonus when you are done.

As a teacher, one of the things you are imparting to your students is that all doors open to one who has an education. The same holds true for you. The higher your education, the more doors are open to you. Look for places that want to help you to achieve more, and go ahead and get that master's degree you have been thinking about.
