Are you interested in developing and improving a school curriculum? How do you determine if a lesson is effective? Do you think you could improve the way teachers and students perform in the classroom? Are you looking for better pay in the education field? These are questions that concern an instructional coordinator.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the average salary for an instructional coordinator is much higher than the average US worker, with a strong outlook for future job growth as more schools begin to focus on student achievement. The integration of technology into the classroom has also increased the need for instructional coordinators.

What is a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction?

A Master's in Curriculum and Instruction is a degree that falls under the Master's in Education umbrella. This field of study focuses on curriculum development and educational theory and is student-data driven. Practitioners are called instructional coordinators, and they develop instructional materials. They oversee the implementation of these instructional materials in cooperation with school teachers and administrators and assess their effectiveness.

Many schools offer a master's in curriculum and instruction degree program online, which is beneficial to working professionals. According to USA News, the online program requires 30 to 36 credits, which will take about two years to complete. Total tuition fees per student are between $11,000 and $31,000 for the online program.

Within the degree itself, there are further subsets of specialization, including Early Childhood Education, Mathematics, Technology, Special Education, Leadership, Online Learning, Higher Education, Library Science, ESL, and many others. For more information regarding specialization, check with the school where you plan to get your degree.

For those who do not yet have their teaching license and would like to get one, this master's degree program can be a good way to begin getting yourself licensed.

What can you do with your master's degree?

Earning a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction will improve your teaching methods. It will also open up more career opportunities for you in different academic environments. An instructional coordinator position will typically require related work experience, such as teaching or school administration. For many people going into this field, the goal is to revamp the school educational system, either at a specific school level or at a national level by making policy changes across the board. A master's degree in curriculum and instruction can be a great way to make a positive impact on the educational systems around you. For those interested in going into a school setting, the role of an instructional coordinator has the benefit of helping students learn without all of the everyday stress associated with being a teacher (i.e., classroom discipline problems, and students' parents). If you would like to keep a more hands-on approach with your school's students, working as a curriculum lead or subject matter expert can be a way for you to launch developmental programs within the school and train colleagues without giving up classroom time.

No matter what you choose to do with it, a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction can benefit your career path.
